There was an eighth building closer to the shore and on the other side of the stream, away from the three complexes. The buildings have been designated A to G. ( view this map)Īrchaeological work by the Ingstads took place during the summers 1961 to 1964, 1966 to 1968, and by Parks Canada 1973 to 1976. The Ingstads based their geographical calculations on the sailing times and directions given in the sagas, and on a map of the North Atlantic drawn by Sigudar Stefansson in 1590. The discovery was as the result of a long and systematic search. However, excavation showed that they belonged to the Viking Age. As these buildings predated the modern settlement, they had been presumed to be of Native American origin. The discovery of the L'Anse aux Meadowes site took place iun 1960 when Dr Helge Ingstad (the former Governor of East Greenland and Spitzbergen) and his archaeologist wife, Anne Stine Ingstad, were told of ruined buildings near to the settlement of L'Anse aux Meadowes. It is likely that its positiuon - easily reached from a number of directions - was the main reason for its settlement.
